For a U.S. law practice, the question is not “Which AI writes the best brief?” It is which tool supports a defined research or drafting step while allowing an attorney to verify authority, protect client information, and remain responsible for the result. CoCounsel Legal and Lexis+ with Protégé describe research and drafting workflows grounded in their legal content. General-purpose assistants can support narrower tasks, but their output is not legal authority. Product pages are vendor descriptions, not proof of accuracy in a particular matter.
Start with the legal task, not the model name
Separate case-law research, document review, first-draft preparation, and client communication. Each has different source and confidentiality requirements. For research, a usable result needs citations that an attorney can open and check. For a document summary, the team needs the exact passage supporting a claim. For a client letter, the attorney must confirm facts, jurisdiction, advice, and tone before sending.
Do not place a live matter into a new product simply to explore its features. Use an approved test file or a sanitized example first, and review the vendor’s data handling terms with the firm’s policies.
| Task | Review before use |
|---|---|
| Legal research | Primary authority, jurisdiction, date, and subsequent treatment |
| Drafting | Facts, client instructions, citations, and omissions |
| Document analysis | Source passage and privilege boundaries |
| Client communication | Attorney approval before delivery |
CoCounsel Legal: verify its sources and fit
Thomson Reuters says CoCounsel Legal brings together Westlaw, Practical Law, and firm knowledge for research, analysis, and drafting. Its support page explicitly says it assists rather than replaces an attorney’s independent judgment. Check the available plan, jurisdictional coverage, integrations, document limits, and citation workflow for the actual practice.
In a trial, give a research question the firm already understands. Open every cited authority, check its holding and current status, and compare the result with the firm’s ordinary research process. Note what the tool missed as well as what it found. Vendor statements about speed do not establish the time your attorneys will spend verifying an answer.
Lexis+ with Protégé: examine the workflow
LexisNexis describes Lexis+ with Protégé, formerly Lexis+ AI, as a research, analysis, and drafting solution using its legal sources and verification features. Its page mentions Shepard’s citation checks. Verify which features are included in the plan offered to your firm and whether the sources match the jurisdiction and practice area.
Test a question with potentially conflicting authorities and ask the tool to show the supporting cases and their treatment. A citation check is useful, but the attorney still determines whether a case applies to the facts. Keep the exact research query and date with the work product.

Talk about AIGeneral AI tools require a narrower scope
A general-purpose assistant may help format a nonconfidential checklist or summarize an approved internal note. It should not be treated as a legal research database merely because it can produce case names. If a firm considers uploading client material, it must verify the product’s retention, access, training, and contract terms first. A consumer subscription and an enterprise agreement can differ.
Never copy a generated citation into a filing without opening the source. Confirm jurisdiction, procedural posture, quotation, and subsequent history. The cost of an invented or misapplied authority can exceed any drafting time saved.
Confidentiality and supervision are design requirements
Map where matter documents go, who can access them, and whether they remain inside an approved workspace. Decide which tasks a lawyer delegates to staff and how the lawyer reviews AI-assisted work. A tool that promises a local or private workflow still needs its specific technical and contractual claims checked. Do not infer confidentiality from a product name.
For a small practice, start with a written policy: approved tools, permitted data classes, citation verification, client disclosure where required, and a record of the responsible attorney. Requirements can vary by jurisdiction and matter, so consult the applicable professional rules and firm counsel for the actual case.
Compare total cost of an accepted result
Ask for current pricing and limits directly from each vendor. Include training, integration, document preparation, attorney review, and corrections. A cheaper tool that repeatedly produces unsupported citations may be more expensive in practice. Use the same authorized sample task across products and record the time to a verified answer, not just the time to a fluent draft.
What should the firm choose?
Use a realistic trial matter
Select a concluded, authorized matter or a synthetic fact pattern with known authorities. Ask each tool the same research question and require links to primary law. Have an attorney check whether the cited cases exist, remain good law, and apply to the facts. Record time to a usable answer, corrections, and any citations the tool missed. Do not use a live client’s confidential documents for a vendor trial until the firm’s data review is complete. If the product offers a free trial, check its limits and expiration separately from long-term licensing.
Choose by task, source coverage, verifiability, data terms, and supervision burden. A legal-specific platform may be more appropriate for authority-dependent research; a general assistant may fit a nonconfidential administrative step. No tool removes the attorney’s duty to check the underlying law and the client’s facts. This U.S. adaptation replaces Brazilian products with U.S.-relevant options; it does not claim a universal best legal AI.
