To convert MP4 to MP3, import the video’s audio track into a compatible editor and export an MP3 file. In Audacity, MP4 import may require the optional FFmpeg library. Saving an Audacity project is not the same as creating a playable audio file. Keep the original MP4 because the MP3 contains audio only.
Choose the needed audio
Decide whether the recipient needs the entire recording or a selected section. Check that you have the right version and permission to reuse it. For a meeting or client interview, a local workflow may be preferable to uploading a confidential recording to an unknown converter. The goal is an accurate, listenable track, not a changed extension.
Check import support
Audacity’s import manual says its optional FFmpeg library supports additional formats, including many MP4 files. Follow Audacity’s installation guidance if the app asks for FFmpeg. A file may still fail because of protection or unsupported encoding; renaming it to .mp3 does not change what is inside.
Listen before editing
Open or import the MP4 and confirm that a real audio track appears. Play the beginning and a middle section. Check duration, voices, channels, and whether the recording matches the intended video. Do not continue with an empty or wrong track simply because the editor displayed a waveform.
| File | Purpose | Keep when |
|---|---|---|
| MP4 | Original video and audio | You may need visual context |
| Audacity project | Editable track and cuts | You may revise the edit |
| MP3 | Audio delivery | The recipient needs playback |
Export the final audio
Select the full track or intended segment, choose Export Audio, and select MP3. Review the export range, quality, bitrate, channels, filename, and destination. Audacity’s project and export guide distinguishes saving a project from delivering audio. Put the MP3 in a different folder or use a distinct name so it cannot be confused with the video.

Talk about my websiteDo not expect conversion to repair sound
Extraction does not restore speech that was masked by noise or clipping. If an interview is too quiet, decide whether a deliberate edit can help and listen to the result. High bitrate cannot add detail that the original never recorded. A voice reference and a music track may need different size-quality decisions.
Check playback outside the editor
Open the MP3 in another player and listen to the beginning, middle, and end. Confirm the duration, volume, and any cut boundary. If the file will be transcribed, check that names and important numbers remain audible. A successful export message does not prove the recipient can use it.
Keep the versions organized
Store the original, editable project, and delivery MP3 separately. Record the date and purpose of a trimmed clip. That allows a future correction without repeatedly converting a compressed output or losing the context supplied by the video.
Frequently asked questions
Can I just rename MP4 to MP3?
No. The container and audio encoding need an actual export process.
Will the MP3 include the picture?
No. Preserve the MP4 when visual information is needed.
Deliver the audio you verified
For a meeting recording, label the export with the meeting date and the part selected. If the source contains multiple speakers, listen for channel imbalance after conversion: one voice may be much quieter on the delivered file. When trimming, leave enough context for a listener to understand the statement and avoid making a quote appear to say something different. If the recording is confidential, confirm the storage and sharing permissions before handing the MP3 to a transcription service.
For an interview or published lesson, check whether background music and other audio elements can be reused separately from the video. Extracting the track does not create new rights. If the MP3 will be posted publicly, the producer should review permissions and any personal information in the recording. A conversion workflow is not a publication approval workflow.
Import the correct source, export a suitable range and format, and play the resulting file independently. That closes the loop between conversion and useful delivery.
Keep the original video for reference.
For an interview or meeting, identify the speaker and time range before exporting. A clear filename and a short note about the source recording help colleagues understand what they received. If the recording contains confidential discussions, share the extracted audio through the same approved channel as the original, with access limited to the intended recipients.
