To create a WhatsApp link, use https://wa.me/ followed by the full phone number in international format, using digits only. For a US number, that means country code 1 followed by the ten-digit number. You can also add a prefilled message with the text parameter, provided the text is URL-encoded. The link opens a conversation; the visitor still has to send the message.

On a website, professional profile, or campaign, the purpose is to make that first contact easier. The destination must be correct, the opening message should help the person handling the inquiry, and the button should explain what happens when someone clicks it. Before sharing the link, test it on a phone and a computer using the number that will actually receive inquiries.

Start with the correct phone number

The official click-to-chat format uses the international phone number without a plus sign, spaces, parentheses, or hyphens. For a US account, include 1, the area code, and the subscriber number. For a business elsewhere, use that account’s actual country code. The WhatsApp click-to-chat documentation explains the format and the optional prefilled message.

Do not add international dialing prefixes such as 011, or assume that every phone number has an active WhatsApp account. Confirm the number with whoever manages customer inquiries, then open the link from a different account to check the destination displayed. A formatting rule cannot establish who owns the account.

The structure is https://wa.me/COUNTRYCODENUMBER, with letters used here only to identify the parts you must replace. Enter the real digits before using it. Do not publish the example as a working contact. One incorrect digit can send a prospective customer to someone else while the button on your website still looks perfectly normal.

Add an opening message without breaking the URL

After the number, add ?text= and the encoded message. Spaces and special characters need appropriate URL encoding. When building the link in JavaScript, encodeURIComponent, described in the MDN reference, handles that part.

A useful message might be: “Hi, I found you through your website and would like a quote.” It identifies the channel and the visitor’s intention without demanding information before the conversation begins. The customer can edit or delete it, so do not treat that text as your only campaign attribution record or as consent for unrelated communications.

const internationalNumber = countryCode + nationalNumber;
const message = "Hi, I found you through your website and would like a quote.";
const link = "https://wa.me/" + internationalNumber
  + "?text=" + encodeURIComponent(message);

Here, countryCode and nationalNumber must come from settings you control and contain digits only. The code encodes the message; it does not validate number ownership or check for an available WhatsApp account. For a fixed website button, you can generate the URL once and paste it into your page builder’s link field.

Place the link on your website or profile

In WordPress or Elementor, select the button, paste the complete URL into its destination field, and use a clear label such as “Request a quote on WhatsApp.” “Click here” gives visitors less information about whether they will open a form, make a call, or leave the website for a conversation. The purpose should be understandable in context, as the WCAG guidance on link purpose explains.

On Instagram, use the links field or the contact option available to your account. Then view the profile as a visitor and follow the complete path. Interfaces can change, so the published result matters more than the address saved in the editor. If you use a link-in-bio service, check that intermediate step too.

For campaigns, keep the opening message consistent with the advertisement. A maintenance quote button should not open a message about website design. That mismatch makes triage harder and forces your team to ask questions that could have been clear from the start.

Identify the source without putting personal data in the URL

A prefilled message can mention the website, Instagram profile, or campaign where someone found you. If you have several sources, use short, understandable descriptions such as “I came from your maintenance page.” This helps the conversation, but it still depends on the visitor sending the text without changing it.

Do not put Social Security numbers, addresses, health information, or private order details in the link. URLs can appear in browser history, screenshots, and analytics systems. The link should open the channel. Information needed to handle the inquiry can be requested afterward, with appropriate context and care.

If you need click measurement, configure an event on your own website and identify the button or source page. Do not append arbitrary parameters to a wa.me URL expecting WhatsApp to turn them into a campaign report. The Google Analytics events documentation helps distinguish a website interaction from what happens later in the sales conversation.

Test the published link before sharing it widely

Start on a phone. Check the number, the account identification presented, and the opening message. Repeat on a computer, noting whether the link directs you to WhatsApp Web or an available desktop app. Success on your own device does not mean an address copied incorrectly onto another page will work.

Next, test the button on the published website. Look for accidental spaces, punctuation at the end of the address, or an incomplete URL. In visual editors, another element can also overlap a button and prevent clicks. Begin the test on the page visitors will actually see, rather than relying on the configuration field.

Finally, agree on the internal process. Who replies? During which hours? What happens when an inquiry falls outside your services? A direct link removes one contact step, but it does not distribute conversations or guarantee a response. Define an opening reply and a simple way to record inquiries that need a follow-up.

An example for a service business

Imagine a company offering maintenance and installation. On the maintenance page, the button prepares “Hi, I need a maintenance quote and found you through your website.” On the installation page, the message names that service instead. Both can use the same number if the team knows how to route the inquiries.

The next question should fill in missing information: service area, type of work, or availability for an assessment. Do not ask “How can we help?” again when the opening message already explains the request. At the same time, do not promise a price or completion date based on a generic message. The link prepares the start of the conversation; a quote needs more information.

If the volume grows, introduce ownership, labels, and integrations based on the conversations you actually receive. Automating an unclear script merely repeats unnecessary questions across more channels. Frequently asked questions

Does the link send the message automatically?

No. It opens the conversation and, when configured, supplies editable text. The visitor can review it and choose whether to send it. Do not count a click as a conversation started or a completed inquiry.

Can I use the same link everywhere?

Yes, but different messages for each service or channel can make triage clearer. Keep an internal list of published links so you can update every placement if the number changes. A single forgotten profile or old campaign page can keep sending people to the wrong account.

Do I need a link generator?

Not for the basic format. You can build the address using the official structure. If you use a generator, inspect the final destination and avoid unnecessary redirects or services that collect information without a clear reason.

A useful link connects the right number to a prepared team

Use the international number, encode the message, and test the button in its real context. Then organize the response and follow-up. The goal is a conversation that starts with less friction and reaches the right person while preserving what the customer is asking for. The link is one part of that process, not a substitute for it.
